Lt. Mike Carpenter supervises the day to day operations of the Transylvania County Detention Facility. The Detention Officers maintain and supervise the Transylvania County Detention Center (Jail). They are responsible for keeping and securing all the inmates committed to the County Jail by the court system. These include persons charged with violations of criminal law that have not posted bond/bail and persons sentenced to active time in the Transylvania County Jail. The Detention Officers are also responsible for transferring inmates to the North Carolina Department of Correction who have been sentenced to active time in the state prison system. The Transylvania County Detention Center also houses, from time to time, inmates being held in federal custody, or inmates awaiting extradition to other states. The current jail has a capacity of 28 inmates and is almost constantly over that number. We have an agreement with the Henderson County Detention Facility to house some of our inmate overflow. We are required to reimburse Henderson County for housing these overflow inmates.

The detention officers are assigned to four (4) rotating shifts, A, B, C, & D. Each shift has a Sergeant who supervises their shift and one(1) detention officer for a total of two(2) officers per shift. There is always one male and one female detention officer on duty.
